The Gay Herman Melville Reader edition by Ken Schellenberg Literature Fiction eBooks
Herman Melville is an deep spiritual writer, His novels are many layered - there is much more to gleaned than the gay bits. The gay parts that author Schellenberg has extracted are rich and captivating. It's just that there is so much more.If you like what you find here, I recommend you look at Jed McKenna's 'Spiritual Warfare' where he parses out 'Moby Dick' as an allegory for the fight to gain enlightenment. McKenna makes the connection between Ishmael, the reputed narrator and Melville himself. That identification makes the voluptuous gay descriptions much more interesting.

The Gay Herman Melville Reader edition by Ken Schellenberg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This brief review appeared in White Crane Journal #56, Spring 2003
What a good idea a gay Melville anthology. To the modern reader, Melville is daunting. By selecting and identifying overt and covert sexual entendre in Melville’s writing, Schellenberg does the master the great favor of making his writing—and his sense of “camp” humor—accessible to modern readers. And Schellenberg’s concise introductory passages give just enough information to make Melville’s disguised sexual and homosexual references shine through swimmingly. Melville
turns out to be not as daunting as one had thought. Toby Johnson
